FIREWORKS SAFETY
This week we celebrate Independence Day - the Fourth of July! One of the traditional celebrations for this holiday has historically included fireworks.
In today's built environment around the Monterey Peninsula and elsewhere in the County, it is understandable that the County and most of the cities and fire districts within Monterey County have banned all consumer fireworks because of the critical fire danger. This year, as we have seen recently, is more critical than past years due to the weather being seen around the county.
In the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea, all fireworks are prohibited. This ban includes all types of fireworks, including labeled "Safe and Sane" fireworks.
If you are in an area which permits "safe and sane" fireworks, please follow the following safety precautions:
- Always use fireworks under adult supervision.
- Always follow the directions printed on the firework or packaging.
- Never use fireworks in or around dry grass or other areas which are like to catch fire.
- After a firework has been used, soak in water before discarding.
- Never throw fireworks in the air or at another person.
- Never take a firework apart or experiment with a firework.
- Light only one at a time and stay clear when fireworks are lit.
On the Monterey Peninsula, only the Cities of Seaside and Marina permit fireworks. Elsewhere in Monterey County, the Cities of Gonzales, Soledad and Greenfield permit the sale and use of "safe and sane" fireworks.
On the Monterey Peninsula, the City of Monterey will host a public fireworks display in the vicinity of Wharf #2. For more information, please contact the City of Monterey.
